My son is very small and skinny he wears size 7-8 in everything but he just turned 10 so i bought 10/12 it's perfect like not too big or small with room to grow, for his 9 year old brother i bought the size 14/16 as hes healthier and wears 10/12 in everything that too is a perfect fit with room to g...row, so i would say they fit to size not bigger made so if you want one that covers their butt size up! Only thing is for -20c winters here in Toronto it doesn't look warm enough and inside lining is very light, better for mild winter days from 10 degrees to -10 degrees, wont be warm enough for colder than that if it had full lining down the jacket and arms it could have been better, the hood is big enough for my son.
I wanted my kiddos to love this jacket (I bought 2). One had a zipper that wouldn't even zipper together out the gate, so I returned for a different one. There are still zipper issues with catching on the fabric along the sides for both coats. My 4 and 6.5 year old both find it difficult to do up so...lo. I do like that it's light weight but warm.
